WAYS TO FIND A MEDICAL JOB IN AUSTRALIA

ANNUAL JUNIOR DOCTOR RECRUITMENT CAMPAIGNS

Australia facilitates an annual campaign to recruit junior doctors including interns and resident medical officers (RMOs) in Hospital and Health Services (HHSs) across the six states. In general, the recruitment campaigns across Australia start around mid-May and run until July, but each state has an independent recruitment process and different application dates.

LOOKING FOR JOBS OUTSIDE THE RECRUITMENT CAMPAIGNS

The very first thing I suggest you to do is go and register with all the State and Territory Health Department Portals. This is where the bulk of jobs that will be suitable for you are posted.

It also highly recommended that you register with sites like Seek, Indeed and Jora as most of these systems automatically upload their postings to these general job advertising sites so that they can increase their reach to prospective candidates.

Most of these recruitment sites have a system of alerts so you can be notified of suitable job openings. So, it would advise to keep these notifications ON to receive any suitable new posting directly into your inbox.

In most States recruitment is centralised, so it is not necessary to look at each individual hospital or health service. However, in Victoria there is a partial centralization through the central system and you will have look around at each hospital website and register if you are interested in a job in Victoria. You will find an example at the end of this below

In VICTORIA and some other states, you can register directly into the hospital website; for example:

Go to the hospital website e.g., https://www.austin.org.au, https://www.mater.org.au
THEN, go to CAREERS

In careers you may find different options, such as

-
Medical 🡪 current vacancies
-
Medical Officer recruitment
-
Junior Medical recruitment
Go to any of those options or similar ones and choose a position that suits you:
In general, IMGs can apply for positions such as:

-
Rotational RMO/JMO/HMO
-
General/surgical RMO
-
ED RMO

I would advise to avoid more senior positions if it is your first job (SHO/PHO/Registrar)

If you do not find any suitable positions, you can REGISTER to the hospital website and select the kind of job offers that you would like to receive. Once a position becomes available you will receive a notification email with the new vacancies.

PERSONAL APPROACH TO THE EMPLOYERS

DO NOT apply online ONLY

Try to go into each hospital website and find out how to get in touch with them, specifically look for the contact details of the Medical Workforce Unit (MWU). You could also call to the Hospital Switch Board and ask to be put through the Medical Workforce Unit manager/ hiring manager, but before you make the call be prepared. They can be terribly busy people depending on the time of the year, so you need to briefly and confidently introduce yourself and enquire about any upcoming job opportunities for RMOs/junior doctors and if they happen to have any vacancies available, if so they might even do an informal interview on the phone on the same day. That is honestly the most effective way to look for jobs. In the worst-case scenario, you might grab an email where you can send an expression of interest with your CV.

Be persistent. Do not take it personal if they do not seem to be friendly and approachable when you call. Keep trying and insist on those hospitals who ask you to keep trying in the future. Even if you must email every hospital every week. Getting the first job is about persistence.

What to Do While Searching For A Job?

While you are waiting to secure a job offer make sure you keep applying on every suitable job you know of. Do not think just because you do not have much experience in that field you have no chance. If you have not passed AMC clinical, prepare for it, and pass it ASAP. Keep your IELTS/OET/PTE updated. Make sure you have certificates for all the time you have worked. Your registration from the home country must be up to date too.

If you are in Australia, try to find some sort of health care job. Many times, people do Level 4 nursing certificate which helps you get a job in a nursing home as a care assistant. Others do short pathology collection courses and work as a phlebotomist. I have met people working in Medical Administration and as a Medical Scientist in Research (only with the MCQ exam). Lately, you could check www.seek.com and try to find some voluntary job in health care like a nursing home or children camps etc.

Some courses, especially BLS and ALS will always look great on the CV and some places require you to have a valid ALS certificate before you start. Additionally, any workshop, course, or webinar that you do will translate into CPD (Continuing Professional Development) points which can help you cover your non-practice gap and comply with the recency of practice standards.

If you wish to get a GP job, do not forget to plan for PESCI.

Finally, try to find an observer-ship, approach every head of a department as well as GP clinics and tell them you are committed and you may be lucky. Call the IMG friendly hospitals like Wollongong, Royal Perth hospital, Charles Gairdner Hospital, etc, and send your CV to them.
